My name is Kristen Vann, and I am an English teacher here at MHS. I grew up in Western North Carolina and graduated from UNC Asheville with a Bachelors in Literature and a minor in Africana Studies. In college, I had a unique opportunity to travel to Ghana to study culture, literacy and education. After college, I did a National Service year with an Americorps program called City Year Chicago. I thoroughly enjoyed my work with this organization, where I was a tutor and mentor to students at Collins Academy High School on the West side of Chicago. At City Year, we had distinct values and principles that guided our service in schools. One of those that has greatly influenced my work as a teacher is as follows: All people especially young people need the same eight things: Meaning, adventure, community, power, respect, structure, challenge and opportunity. I believe it is important that students receive exposure to all eight of these things in a classroom environment. As an educator, I strive to respect all students, to build community in my classroom, and to empower students through reading and writing. Every day is an adventure and I look forward to helping each scholar experience success! In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family and my cat, exploring the outdoors, snowboarding, eating, and writing creative non fiction pieces.
